Windows XP features a Start Menu, Windows Vista features a Start Menu, and Windows 7 also features a Start Menu. Windows 8 does not feature a Start Menu, it features a new Start Screen. If you don’t like the Start Screen, if you prefer using a Windows XP style Start Menu on your Windows 8 PC, then I invite you to give Spencer a try.

Spencer is a portable application. This means that you will not have to install anything on your Windows 8-powered machine. You just have to download an archive, extract its contents, and then pin the Spencer executable to the taskbar.

You don’t have to pin Spencer to the taskbar – but if you do, you will have a more enjoyable user experience. You see, when you launch Spencer, it will display a Windows XP style Start Menu. If Spencer is pinned to the taskbar, the Start Menu will not show up just anywhere; it will show up where the Start Menu is supposed to show up.

The Windows XP style Start Menu that Spencer has to offer displays a list of all the applications installed on your PC; you can easily locate and easily launch any application you want. The Start Menu also displays links to system utilities, the Control Panel, the admin command line, the Run function, and the shutdown PC function.

Spencer is free software. You don’t have to part with your money to use it. You may want to part with some of your money though and make a donation to support the application’s development.

Spencer is free, portable, and displays a Windows XP style Start Menu when you run it. You can run Spencer on a Windows 8-powered PC without any problems.

Pros

Spencer does not have to be installed; the application is portable. When you run Spencer, it displays a Windows XP style Start Menu. Spencer does not interfere with the Windows 8 Start button. Spencer is free software.

Cons

I too dislike the new Start Screen for Windows 8. But I would rather find a Start Menu replacement that’s reminiscent of Windows 7, not Windows XP.
